Norayr Mehrabyan

Norayr Mehrabyan

N. Mehrabyan was born in 1941 in Yerevan.
In 1948 he entered the Yerevan Dance College, and after graduation he began to work in the National Academic Theatre of the Opera and Ballet, as a soloist.

The public gave a warm welcome to the images created by Mehrabyan: A. Khachatouryan’s “Gayaneh”, Minkus’s “Don Qishot”, Hakhinyan’s “Akhtamar”, Prokofiv’s “Romeo and Juliette”.

In 1970 Mehrabyan was invited to the Leningrad’s well known “Choreographic miniatures” ballet company, led by choreograph L. Yakobson, a genius teacher.

Despite the short time period, Mehrabyan’s dancing program was enlarged by Mozart’s “Pas – des – deux”, Bach’s “Variations”, Stravinski’s “Contrasts”.

From 1973 to 1983 he was an artistic director of the Yerevan State Choreographic School, and at the same time a classic dance instructor. He also worked in the State Dance Ensemble of Armenia.

During the years of working in the choreographic school he began to create dances. The beginning of the action was the fourth part of Mozart’s “40th symphony”, which was followed by a chain of stagings: Vivaldi – “Concerto grosso” (it was performed in some cities of Holland during the tours of the school).

The Bize’s “Youth Symphony”, Khachaturyan’s “Russian Dance” found a warm reception at the Bolshoy Theatre in Moscow. Beethoven’s “Variations for the piano”, Mehrabyan’s children ballet “Wash’Em Clean” consisting of two actions and other plays adorn young Mehrabyan’s artistic life.

In 1984 – 1986 he was the artistic director of the National Academic State Theatre of Opera and Ballet.

In 1976 Mehrabyan was awarded with the honorable title of “The Honored Artist” and in 2006 he received an honorable title of “The National Artist of RA” and was awarded with the M. Khorenatsi Medal.

Diaspora has its special place in Mehrabyan’s creative biography.

Repertoires created by him have their special characters and colors in the ensembles of Armenian communities. At the same time he originated new ensembles at “Nor Serund” cultural union of Beirut, in Melkonyan College of Cyprus, “Sardarapat" dance ensemble of Hamazgayin Cultural Union in Syria, “Ani” Dance Troupe of Hamazgayin Cultural Union in Los-Angeles, USA, which has been closely cooperating with “Barekamutyun” ensemble for 20 years, “Yeraz” dance troupe in Paris. The dance program of “Yeraz” dance troupe includes wide range of bright and unique dance performances staged by Norayr Mehrabyan.

Entirely being devoted to the dance art, N. Mehrabyan has brought not only the experience of a dancer, but also that of a producer having brilliant individuality.

That is why the audience notices and appreciates “The Apricot Tree”, “The Dance with Sabers”, “The Dance of Mountain Boys”, “Nocturne” produced by Mehrabyan.

These dances are the result of the new thought and correct interrelations of the modern and traditional.
